Using computational modeling approaches I am investigating the nature of sensory representations in neocortex and their interaction with episodic memory in the hippocampus. The models are applied to perceptual decision making tasks to explain differential performance dependent on the stimulus material and the availability of episodic memory.

For my master thesis and during a follow-up research project I have built a parametric model of the pigeon hippocampal formation comprising state-of-the-art knowledge of anatomy and connectivity, that can be converted into a neural network model.

We study, on the one hand, how episodic memories are stored and retrieved in interaction with the sensory and semantic systems. On the other hand, we investigate how episodic memories influence these sensory and semantic systems.
The Institut für Neuroinformatik (INI) is a central research unit of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. We aim to understand the fundamental principles through which organisms generate behavior and cognition while linked to their environments through sensory systems and while acting in those environments through effector systems. Inspired by our insights into such natural cognitive systems, we seek new solutions to problems of information processing in artificial cognitive systems. We draw from a variety of disciplines that include experimental approaches from psychology and neurophysiology as well as theoretical approaches from physics, mathematics, electrical engineering and applied computer science, in particular machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computer vision.
